Introduction

You are able to design, manage and monitor exercise programmes for each special population group (pregnancy, children and youth and older adults) who want to enhance their health and improve their fitness. Additionally, because lifestyle diseases are increasing in their prevalence across all spectra of the population, you will also learn about the chronic diseases of lifestyle so that you can assist clients in reducing their disease risk, promote their health and enhance their fitness, while working within your professional scope of practice. In the context of special populations, once qualified, you are able to screen, assess and fitness test special population groups. You will also be able to implement safe and effective exercise programmes for special population groups. Additionally, you will be able to provide advice and support in terms of health, lifestyle and exercise management to special population groups.

Description

This NQF level 6 Learning programme is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE). The qualification it achieves is registered on the Higher Education Qualifications Sub Framework

This learning programme provides a thorough balance of theory, applied theory and practice which will enable you as a graduates to work as specialist fitness practitioners in both the national and international fitness industries.

You are able to design, manage and monitor exercise programmes for each special population group (pregnancy, children and youth and older adults) who want to enhance their health and improve their fitness. Exercise Science for Special Populations
Exercise physiology: How the body adapts to exercise and training, and how this differs for each special population group. This knowledge will be used to influence training and exercise programmes. Kinesiology: Changes in posture through the developmental and aging process influences how the body functions. These changes have an impact on exercise selection and choice.
Nutrition: Nutritional requirements for each special population group and how to provide advice to clients.
Screening, Assessment and Programme Design for Special Populations
Screening and assessment: Screening and assessment appropriate to each special population group with values and norms that relate to health variables for each group.
Fitness testing: Each special population group has its unique battery of health related tests. The results from these tests determine the level and intensity of exercise needed.
Programme design: How to design and implement programmes specific to each special population group.
Health and Injury Management
Chronic diseases of lifestyle: Lifestyle related diseases in the context of prevention and management through exercise as well as scope of practice and the multi-disciplinary approach to exercise.
Common injuries: Common injuries and their aetiology for each special population group. You gain an understanding of how to avoid injuries through physical activity.
Lifestyle Coaching, Motivation and Communication
Public speaking and presentation skills: Communication and presentation skills are important skills to acquire when dealing with special population groups. This subject includes practical sessions where you learn and demonstrate essential techniques.
Lifestyle coaching, motivation and communication skills: How to identify, plan and manage individuals’ lifestyle choices. You are given the theoretical and practical knowledge that enables you to influence behaviour modification for each special population group.
Capstone project: This is a long-term project that incorporates all modules. You must show your ability to integrate all facets of assessment, testing, training and monitoring to ensure that each population group reaches their goals, and must identify processes that should be followed to improve fitness and health.

To enter this programme, you must have achieved the NQF level-5 Higher Certificate in Fitness or National Certificate in Fitness or equivalent qualification in the field of exercise science at NQF level 5.
